Monster Sauce (Blueberry and Pear Sauce)

This recipe is sure to please kids; it’s blue! For the IC child many artificially coloured and flavoured treats my be off limit due to the nature of their ingredients, which is exactly why this healthy snack is a welcome change of pace from ordinary pear (mock apple) sauce.

If they are tolerated, blackberries can easily be substituted for the blueberries or try a combination of both. This is a sweet yet healthy treat for your little monsters. (It’s also a great Halloween party food.)

Monster Sauce (Blueberry and Pear Sauce)

¾ cup fresh or frozen blueberries, thawed

8-10 large ripe pears, peeled, cored and sliced into small chunks

¼ cup water (the berries will create a lot of their own juice, so you may want to add just a few drops of water at a time, depending on the consistency that you want)

½-1¼ cups sugar, depending on how sweet you want the final taste to become-the sugar can be added as the recipe cooks to adjust for sweetness

Combine all ingredients in a large, heavy bottomed pot and cover. Simmer over low heat for at least an hour, stirring frequently. You want a very soft texture so it’s perfectly fine to let this simmer for several hours or alternatively cook it in a slow cooker for 6-8 hours.

For an even “finer” texture you can pulse this in the blender or a food processor for about a minute. Once prepared monster sauce will keep covered in the fridge up to one week, or frozen in a freezer proof container for 3 months.

Delicious warm, at room temperature or cold, it even works well over vanilla ice cream or as a topping for pancakes.

Makes about 2 ½ cups of monster sauce, depending on the size of your pears
