Interstitial Cystitis Book Directory

interstitial cystitis, IC, icadvice, www.icadvice.com, icadvice.com, painful bladder syndrome, PBS, cystitis, chronic pain, pelvic pain, pelvic floor dysfunction, bladder pain, directory, IC world listings, IC help, IC literature, urology, IC books, books, reference, guides, listings, IC diet, IC help, diet, health, IC recipes, book, textbooks If the amount of literature published (in book format) about IC was water we would all be extremely thirsty.

Don’t get me wrong, there are a few stellar books and they deserves recognition, but to date the number of books published on IC sits at about 20, with several of them being highly geared towards the medical community (aka, all those doctors you have stopped speaking to). There is no problem with this, I personally find reading medical texts rather enjoyable, but I know not everyone shares this view, especially, if you are searching for immediate answers and information to very serious medical questions.

So the question arises if there are books for the “layman” and books (more for) doctors, why are so many doctors and heath care professionals still living in the dark ages when it comes to IC knowledge? This question puzzles me, I find that the newer breed of doctors, those who are in their late 20s-early 40s seem to, often, know the most about IC or better yet offer the patient advice, treatment options and help as opposed to oh, I don’t know telling them to take a Valium and see a shrink or completely dismissing their symptoms all together. At the very least Dr. Robert Moldwin’s “The Interstitial Cystitis Survival Guide” should be standard reading early on in med school. It outlines a modern structure of what IC is, treatment options and coping strategies, in concise, simple to understand language.

When it comes to the IC patient I suggest you read as wide a variety of literature on IC as you can, google until your fingers are sore, read until you fall asleep with a book on your chest and then wake up and red a few more chapters. Knowledge my friends, as the age-old adage states, is power. It empowers you by giving you a candid and informative view into this strange and dare I say, horrific medical condition which now affects your body. As with any medical issue you have the right to know as much as you possibly can about what you are inflicted with. Reading about IC will most likely instil in you more confidence as well. When you are sitting in the urologists office and trying to avert your eyes from the detailed plastic replica of the male antinomy, you will find yourself able to actively participate in what the doctor is telling you. You will know that mast cells are not little compartments on ships and that more options than just Elmiron (which does work for many but not all ICers) exist out there.

You will be able to define IC on your own terms and you will have to knowledge base to explain it to others around you. Yes, granted the amount of literature is small, but it is there and I really urge you to take advantage of it. With any luck the number of IC books on the market will change in the near future, but until you can go into any bookstore and pick up a book about IC as easily as you can, say one about the “Atkins Diet” do yourself a great favour and source out IC books by the internet or have them ordered in specially. You deserve to know all that you can.

Here follows a list of all the IC books that are currently in print, that I am aware of (if you know of others please let me know). If anybody would like to write reviews for any of them please contact Jessica Cangiano.
